Mayrhofen is set in the Ziller valley and offers brilliant snowboarding, with apres ski to match. It is also very popular with familes, so there is something for everyone.

The snowboarding and skiing takes place on two separate areas - the Penken and the Ahorn mountains. The free ski bus also opens up the huge Zillertal area and the Hintertux Glacier, as well as the resorts of Zell am Ziller, Gerlos and Koningsleiten.

For beginners, there are a variety of gentle slopes at the top of the Ahorn mountain, and for the more experienced, you can ride all the way down to the village (the only run in Mayrhofen where you can). On the Penken, there are blue and red runs everywhere for cruising on piste. For those looking for something a bit more testing, there are some steeper pistes, including the Harakiri (which claims to be the steepest pisted run in Austria with a 78% gradient!), and some great tree runs once you know where to look.

The resort is however most famous for its freestyle scene, and for good reason. The Vans Penken Park is simply awesome, and has hosted the Oakley Jib Vid competition each year. There are so many kickers, rails, boxes, wall rides and other unique features that you may never want to leave!! There is also a halfpipe which, together with the park itself, is maintained by a crew of park shapers and machine drivers twice a day. For those taking their first steps into freestyle riding, there is a beginners park with 9 or 10 features to practice on.

Apres Ski

You will find a great apres ski scene in Mayrhofen with its numerous bars, pubs and clubs. The centre is lively but can be avoided if you are looking for a more relaxed and peaceful holiday.

You will find that the party starts around lunchtime in Mayrhofen, and continues into the early hours of the morning. Make sure you visit the Ice Bar, next to the main Penken gondola station, for after ride beers. If you get the chance, you should also check out the White Lounge. This is an ice bar and ice hotel located on the Ahorn Mountain and hosts apres ski parties once or twice a week.

The resort has a traditional look to it and offers plenty of indoor and outdoor activities off the slopes. There is shopping, ice skating, bowling, a casino, skidooing, sleigh rides and a Wellness Centre.
